Overview

Barnstable, the Cape's largest town, has the widest variety of real estate. Each of the town's eight villages has a different flavor and real estate that fits that flavor. Barnstable also has several fire districts, and local taxes include a fire district charge.

The historic and rural northside compares well with many outer Cape areas for buyers who want to be close to nature while still being close to getting off-Cape. Centerville, located on the south side, is primarily residential has a beautiful beach. Osterville also on the south side is primarily residential and includes inlets and harbors for fishing and boating. Hyannis is the town's central business and commercial district, and includes town offices and several shopping malls. Hyannis is also a fishing village, and its harbor provides steamship access to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Islands. Marstons Mills, located on Route 28, is primarily residential. Cotuit, a village located on a peninsula on the south side, is primarily residential and has several small beaches. West Barnstable on the north side is primarily residential and sparsely populated. Barnstable also on the north side houses the County Complex and has a working harbor and several small beaches.
